Not All Silicone Is Created Equal

Anti-wrinkle products are big business. Lately there have been a lot of silicone products that have flooded the market, each claiming instantaneous and long lasting results. In order to figure out why all silicone anti-wrinkle pads are not the same, let’s first go over what these pads are and what they specifically do.

Silicone pads are just that. Thin sheets of silicone cut out to a certain shape that’s meant to fit onto a designated area on the body in order to “target” wrinkles that have formed in that specific area. Treating imperfections on the skin using silicone sheeting  is not new. Silicone has long been used by doctors to effectively treat Keloid scarring. The properties of silicone work to provide hydration to the skin’s surface to promote the skin’s natural ability to retain moisture and in turn produce collagen. Why is Collagen important and how can it help get rid of wrinkles? Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body and makes up about 70% of the proteins contained within the skin. Collagen helps the development of hair, skin, nails, bones, ligaments and tendons and helps us to move around freely. As we age, the body’s production of collagen slows down. When the collagen within our skin starts to get depleted, it affects the skin’s elasticity and flexibility, which results in deep grooves left behind (wrinkles and fine lines). Restoring collagen will result in smooth and supple, glowing skin.

Silicone works to get rid of wrinkles by helping to hydrate the skin. The pad is placed on the affected area of the body. Underneath the pad, the skin rests in a micro-climate of moisture and oxygen that is conducive to healing. The silicone lets the skin breathe by letting oxygen to pass through easily, but at the same time, it locks in moisture. With this optimal oxygen flow and hydration, the wrinkles and fine lines become hydrated and the skin  smoothens and plumps. Longer treatment times means better hydration, and therefore, the less visible the wrinkles and lines will be.

Not all silicone however is created equal, and the silicone made in China and in offshore companies may be harmful to your health. Good quality silicone anti-wrinkle pads are made from 100% silicone. There should be absolutely no additives and the pad should be thick and even in color. Pads made to the highest quality possible are made from silicone that has been cured with a platinum curing process. In a platinum-based silicone cure system, also called an addition system (because the key reaction-building polymer is an “Addition reaction”), two different chemical groups (a silicone hydride and a vinyl) react in the presence of platinum (which serves as the catalyst). In this reaction, an ethyl group [C(H2)- C(H2)] is formed and there are no byproducts, ensuring a clean product.

Another form of curing is called peroxide curing, which is actually widely used for curing silicone rubber. This type of curing process leaves behind byproducts, which can be an issue in food contact and medical applications.

SilcSkin anti-wrinkle pads are designed with medical grade silicone and manufactured using a platinum curing process. Also noteworthy is that they manufacture everything locally in the U.S.A. Everything — the pads (in a sterile environment in their labs), the packaging and the instructional booklets are all made in Los Angeles. The cornerstone product in the SilcSkin arsenal is the award winning Decollette Pad. This is a wide pad that’s used on the chest area and can be used for up to 30 days. The great thing about this pad is that you can use it wherever you find wrinkles. On your butt, hips, inner thighs, lower belly, etc. Because of its unique shape, it’s very versatile and fits in various areas of the body. You can also trim the pad with a pair of scissors in order for a better fit. SilcSkin always has some kind of special on the website, though November is the absolute best time to stock up since they have a whopping 30% off for Cyber Monday. And it’s going on right now at
