Are You Ready For Summer?

Don’t look now but Summer’s just around the corner! Most of the country was hiding under a vortex of ice this past winter (and spring!) so warmer temperatures and sunshine are going to be a beautiful sight for sore eyes. But before you go celebrating the end of the ice age by hitting the beach/pool/campsite/great outdoors, you’re going to need to make sure your skin — which has spent the better part of winter under canopies of warmth — is ‘Summer ready’. Here are a few tips on how best to protect your skin from long lasting sun damage – and summer damage.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends protecting your skin from the damaging effects of the sun by doing the following:  1) wear a wide brimmed hat to shade your face, head, ears, and neck  2) stay in the shade – especially during the peak heat hours  3) wear sunglasses that block as much of the UVA and UVB rays as possible (sunglasses over eyes = less squinting = less wrinkles!)  4) wear clothing that covers your arms and legs and  5) use sunscreen with a SPF 15 or higher (we recommend a minimum of SPF 30!) that blocks both UVA and UVB rays – also known as a ‘broad spectrum’ SPF.  Be sure to use a sunscreen that is not expired (check the expiration date!) and always remember to reapply your sunscreen if you are in the sun for more than 2 hours and also after swimming, sweating or toweling off.

Celebrity esthetician Renee Rouleau says it’s very straightforward. “The #1 cause of lines and wrinkles is sun exposure. If you want to look young, avoid the sun. It’s really that simple. A little sun damage = a little damage. A lot of sun = a lot of damage.”  She writes about how she keeps her skin safe and beautiful while protecting herself from skin cancer, wrinkles and skin growths in her blog and provides information from the importance of antioxidants to remembering to use a hand lotion with SPF15+.

As the seasons shift and the climate and weather change, you might notice your skin make some changes as well. For example, areas that were dry might become oily and areas that were normal might become prone to acne. At the end of the day, your skin will be thirsty for rejuvenation and replenishment. Avoiding the sun, keeping yourself hydrated from the inside and applying moisturizers on the outside are all important steps, but your skin on your face and the wrinkles forming around your eyes, mouth, forehead and décolletage all need a special kind of attention. SilcSkin’s 100% medical grade silicone pads draw moisture to the skin’s surface; can improve irregular collagen structure and can improve overall skin tone. They are also non-transdermal and have no allergy causing additions or adhesives. The pads can be worn overnight on a daily basis and can last you over a month. So after a long summer day carefully and vigilantly protecting yourself from sun damage, you can rest assured and sleep soundly knowing the pads you are wearing on your skin are reversing the story of your age as told by wrinkles. You can wake up to a more youthful appearance, which we hope will put a smile on your face and a bounce in your step and bring out your youth all that much more.
